  3. It was with great despair that I learned of the death of Anna’s foot. My sympathy is with her and her family, all deeply shaken by the untimely and cruel loss of one of Life’s most useful appendages! O cruel death!! To strike down a noble foot in the prime of her life!!!

    I leave you with this excerpt from a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, which I hope will bring comfort and even guidance, in your time of loss.

    “Deep-hearted man, express grief for thy dead in silence like to death -
    Most like a monumental statue set
    In everlasting watch and moveless woe
    Till itself crumble to the dust beneath.
    Touch it; the marble eyelids are not wet;
    If it could weep, it could arise and go.”

    Life calls to us, to rise and to go, and so we MUST rise and go—except for Anna, of course, who must rise and stumble (but the most important thing is to RISE, is my point here) and face a new tomorrow! Some of us will face it with both feet and some with only one foot, but face it we must! Onward Christian soldier! Stumble off to war!
