Mac Still Rules

Just in time for me to spend too much money on a <head hung in shame> paper calendar and address book to try to reconstruct my outrageous life from memory……

As it turns out, I have a bum battery, not a crashed computer.  Well, it is about time… I’ve only had that battery in continuous use for 4 whole years!   I will wear the shame forever, for spewing such nonsense about crashing Mac’s in my last post!!!   May such filth never cross my lips again.

I cannot get a new Macbook battery right now as business is slow and it’s not really a necessity.  However, just looking at my sweet lil Macbook that has served me so faithfully for 4 years….brings a little Christmas tingle to my heart.   Meanwhile, absence makes the heart grow considerably fonder as I am forced to use Rich’s <clear throat, spit> PC whenever I need to do anything.   I wish I’d known I’d have to stock up on pity parties and electronic diaper wipes, for all the sorry ways PC’s need babysitting every 5 minutes.

I can’t even talk about it.   Ugh.

Smother Love by Nancy Wilson

As I mother our five outrageous, delightful kids, I am always trying to examine and test my inner “starting place” for my impulses, feelings, and decisions (both big and small). Sometimes I have to correct myself on a daily basis!  I have done “good” things for the wrong reasons, and the same thing for the right reasons, at different times. This little blog post by Nancy Wilson so clearly articulated something I have been thinking about that I thought I would post it.

Mr. Kidney’s Anniversary

 :-)

Today we got a fun “Happy Birthday” email from Ken Mick, whose kidney used to live in Rich.  So, it’s really an adoption anniversary (appropriate, since that is a recurring theme in this household :)).   One year ago today Rich and Ken were in surgery.  We even have a video of it for proof!   We are so thankful for the way God providentially made Rich a match for Ken, for the finances coming in for both families to pull the recovery time off, and for all He taught us through it.  We are happy to report that Mr. Kidney is doing great, and that Ken and Rich are both living normal and healthful lives.

We know at least two people who need a kidney right now.   The other day I was at the doctor’s office, and the nurse shared with me that her sister recently died waiting for a kidney.   Most of her family would not even agree to be match tested! So let me take advantage of a successful kidney transplant anniversary today and give a little plug.   While any surgery is a serious matter (and painful), donation and living with one kidney is amazingly safer and more successful that most people seem to understand.   We have been surprised w/the questions Rich has gotten at times, and his standard response is, “I don’t even walk lopsided.. it’s amazing!”   :^) The only “side effect” that Rich has from giving a kidney is that he will not use Ibuprofen/NSAIDS ever again b/c it is nephrotoxic (the nephrologist told us that in his opinion, NObody should touch Ibuprofen b/c of its effects on healthy kidneys). Other than that, he lives 100% normally, and still works at his heavy physical work daily.  It’s always a serious matter to consider subjecting a healthy body to a surgery in order to help someone else, but if you have someone in your life that needs one, consider doing a little research before passing up the opportunity to help.  <3

An organizational explosion!

Well, what else could it be when the Duggar and Maxwell families get together?   It makes me want to go rearrange the teabags, just thinking about it!!!   :-)   The two planets did merge for a moment, and you can see that at the link in this email.

Many of you know what a great tool Teri Maxwell’s Managers Of Their Homes book/system can be in a quest to live intentionally & wisely during this particular season of life.   That’s been a help here for years.   Last year, our family implemented for the first time their Managers Of Their Chores system and chore packs using the online Choreware program that the Maxwells have developed.   Just about the only thing I enjoy about waking up at 5 AM is seeing Ben whizzing through the house with his chore pack pinned to his shirt, all excited!

We’ve only seen a couple Duggar shows, but I’d spotted their MOTH schedule on the wall in the background of an interview.   Intriguing! We appreciate that the Duggars very clearly give God the glory for all things.  I appreciate most of all that both Michelle Duggar and Teri Maxwell have put themselves out there, openly sharing their struggles and “from whence they came,” as well as generously sharing what they have learned.  They put themselves in a position where they will be regularly criticized (sometimes ruthlessly!), and overly-examined by Christians and non-Christians alike, all to show the worth of the gospel in daily life, and to help other women like me.

Here’s the link to a Maxwell Family Blog post I read today, featuring pictures of their visit to the Duggar home and pics of the Duggar chorepacks hanging in a row.. LOL  Love it!

Ben by Peter Jeffery

A perfect little book for the boys!   My friend Betty kindly thinks of us when she comes across excellent materials, and she sent along this little book at Christmastime this year.

The back of the book says, “Ben is a young boy full of energy — and lots of questions!  He is growing up in a Christian home, so he knows a lot about God, but when he gets to know Pastor Mike, disobeys his mom, and eventually spends time talking with his grandfather and his dad, Ben learns the true meaning of the gospel.”

We appreciated the way the gospel message was clearly presented in a context that speaks to situations in our own boys’ lives.   Super duper little gem.  Note: We have not read the subsequent books in the series, but plan to check them out soon.

An Idea For Moms or Dads

I started writing to the children when Lydia was born, and I’m sharing it as an idea to consider for other parents out there who may find it to be a good practice in your families as well.   Our family’s collection includes everything from “cherishing you” type of letters from me, instructional advice-types of letters, and cute or special memories for the children of Rich’s and my growing up life as well as our life together with the children.  I also have recently started including recipes everyone likes in the family and notes on organization and household management.   Finally, there is a big collection of articles from long dead, and not yet dead, wise counselors on every type of subject.

Of course, we are all growing along the way, so if you do this, date your entries so that the children can keep them in perspective :-).  There are things I wrote as a new mom that I wouldn’t necessarily find as worthy to write at this point in the game, and I’m sure the same will be true 20 years from now.   However, there are enough letters to them that I would repeat exactly over again too, and I could not have written them now as well as I did then. If I hadn’t written to the children at the time we had a newborn and a two year old, or when financial times were particularly lean for us, I wouldn’t remember as well now what it was like then, both the great wonder of it and the difficulties, so it is helpful for them to see how God worked in our life and the blessings and lessons we learned then that we could not transmit in the same way now.

The children don’t always read these regularly.   Some of them are more interested than others.  But, they have their whole lives ahead of them and I don’t know if Rich and I will be around a year or ten years from now.  Our memories fade, too.  I don’t know hardly anything about my grandparents and what they think or how they have lived, and that doesn’t mean that my parents didn’t tell me; maybe they did and maybe they didn’t. The point is, it’s nice to refer to something written and tangible, something we can pass along despite the busy seasons of life in which we constantly find ourselves, something that our children can see through new, maturing eyes as they reread the entries during their various stages of life.

Some years my entries have been many and sometimes I go too long without adding to it.  Lately, I am adding lots and lots of things!   I also started a private blog for the children and this has helped me to keep it up, and also helps the kids read it more often.  During this school break, I have been busy copying everything previously written into the blog, and now I will keep only one master copy printed out in a binder, kept with the family albums (previously, each child had a big binder).  When the kids leave the house, we can make them a copy of the master binder and they’ll be good to go.

My ultimate goal is to equip the children through these entries.   The days are “short and evil,” and anything we can do to give them tools or direction, as well as a sense of the rich heritage they have been given by God’s grace and the love with which we have loved them, seems worth the few minutes it takes to jot something down, or copy over an article.  So there’s my little idea and I hope it will be of use to someone else too.

Gutsy Documentary

We rented this DVD from Netflix this week. Expelled:  No Intelligence Allowed is a refreshing, gutsy documentary about the state of the exchange between academia’s most accomplished scientists on intelligent design vs. darwinism.    Ben Stein also takes a good look at past and present ramifications of the positions and the dialog.   Chock full of detailed interviews with the big brains on both sides of the argument, there was never a dull moment. Cerebral, yet riveting! :-)

The Fruit Of Her Hands–Respect And The Christian Woman

I loved this little (109 page) book by Nancy Wilson over ten years ago when it came out, and love it even more now!  Rich & I pulled it out recently to review the outstanding chapter called “Principles And Methods.” I bet this chapter could chop off about 80% of the problems people have with living in peace, particularly in the church. Imagine multitudes freed to live their lives “to God,” de-stressed about “the sisters!”   So there’s my plug for the best chapter, though I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a hearty shout-out for the “Lovemaking” chapter, which is super too.

This book is definitely written from a Christian/biblical perspective on womanhood & marriage.  It’s not a book for everyone & not everyone would enjoy it, so make good use of your delete button if you like, as we all must from time to time :^).

It’s been a delight to follow Nancy, and her daughters’ and daughter-in-law’s blog lately. Jammy Rides, Pom Pom mania, and Crash Piles are a result of Nancy’s crazy family.   Under their influence, “paint piano orange” has made it onto my to-do list, albeit so far down that I may never see that accomplishment. Many years ago we put chocolates on our kids’ pillows every Saturday night “so you wake up with a sweet taste in your mouth on the Lord’s Day!” because of something Nancy said.  She changed my perspective on the marks in our table, helped me smile at fingerprints on walls and windows, and continues inspiring me to fearlessly seek “joy overflowing” as a worthy and thoroughly possible standard for home.

A book by Ken Mick, Sr!!!

Friends and Family — You know there is a Ken Mick Jr, the guy who “adopted” Rich’s kidney as of the transplant ten months ago.   Some of you know there is also a Ken Mick, SR!   He is an excellent pastor, husband, father of many, grandfather of many more, kidney recipient like his son, and now… <drum roll>…. published author of a great new book!!!!!

The book is Lion Slayer:  Using The Right Truth To Slay The Enemy.    In 100 pages, there is help!  Dr.  Jay Adams wrote of the book:  ”You may have looked for a book that helps you grow and overcome sin and Satan.  Well, here it is!  This volume, put to good use, will guide you scripturally to overcome evil.  Get it for yourself, and give copies to your friends.” –Dr. Jay Adams, Author, Pastor, Seminary Professor

From the back of the book:  ”Using the right truth to slay the enemy deletes the anguished cry, “I don’t want to be this way!” from the lips of God’s people.  God desires His people to grow spiritually strong and to triumph over temptation. Yet sinful habits overwhelm multitudes of believers, who cherish little hope for deliverance.  This book provides welcome relief.  Prayerful readers will learn to:

Break the habits of ensnaring sins, and achieve a triumphant lifestyle.

Recognize why we sometimes keep on disobeying God.

Discover the right truth that delivers us from bondage.

Pray the right truth that rescues us from overwhelming temptations.

Walk in the Holy Spirit and not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

We are confident that Ken Mick’s experience from teaching these truths for over forty years will be a blessing to all our hearts.   Available at www.lionslayer.com

Moody Science DVD’s

Another drop in the “recommended” category.   Our children have watched these since they were toddlers, absorbing them in more comprehensive ways each year.  Truly captivating for the entire family.   There are 19 DVD’s and each one is approx. 30 minutes each. You can buy them in a set or separately for about $7 a piece.

In writing this post, I asked our children to give me some examples so I could jot this down quickly without looking back at the videos.   Here are some comments:

Lydia:  ”I remember microscopic flowers that are in the desert.  It is amazing how God created those flowers to stand the heat of the day and the extreme cold of the night.  I remember that after every video, they tell the gospel. The whole point is to prove God’s amazingness and to show how creation teaches us lessons.”

Jubilee:  ”Well, Mom, you didn’t let us see Empty Cities until we were a little older but it is my favorite.  It showed Mayan and Inca cultures and how they were so great and did amazing things but then the artifacts found there show they started to worshiped false gods and did human sacrifices.  They were the smartest and most advanced people on earth for a long time but the movie shows how today their descendants that are here today are some of the most primitive people on earth.  <note: this is the only video I didn’t let my super small children watch b/c it has some National Geographic type images of primitive nakedness (in modern day times) and killing images (on their stone carvings).. I would let the kids watch it earlier now than I did then (though not an adopted child for a while after they’ve been here), but there is a heads-up about that for parents. All the other videos are free of concern.>

Jesse:  ”In the one called Dust Or Destiny, it is really cool because you can see certain fish starting to form in their eggs.  It is cool how their mothers lay their eggs on the shore and not in the sea  If they don’t get out of their hole in a certain time, then they won’t live.  There is only one possible hour of the night that will actually work for them to do this and live and make it back into the tide, and the fish do it because God gave them instincts.   In Prior Claim, I remember that spider that makes a bubble so it can go under the water.  It even makes a home under the water in the bubble, or surrounded by bubbles.  In River of Life, it showed how the body works and it even shows you a real human heart beating on a pump, and all the valves.   The guy on the video shows us about how we need blood for our heart and also we need spiritual “blood”.. that God shed His blood for us and stuff like that.  In Windows Of The Soul, I learned how our eye turns everything upside down but then our brain turns it right side up so we can see!”  <believe me, I had to cut this short.. Jesse is on a MAJOR roll!  He has probably seen these a hundred times and he never gets sick of them!>

Valerie:  In The City Of Bees it shows how they can carry tons of honey to their hives.   Bees actually talk to one another.  They don’t allow sick bees to be in their hive.  Their system of life is way different than humans.   God created us to live differently than the bees.  I loved seeing how the nurse bees care for the larva.    In Prior Claim, it told about Venus Fly Trap and the Trap Door Spider, and many other things that were the basis for a lot of our modern inventions.”

Benjamin:  ”I like the bees movie!!!!!”  :^)
